Outward Bound Curriculum
Outward Bound courses around the world vary in the type and style however,
they are grounded in the same core values
and beliefs about education. Courses can be long wilderness courses,
urban education programs, short intense challenge trainings, and custom
courses designed to the needs of the client. Each course is an interpretation
of the mission of Outward Bound that suits the needs of the culture, environment
and most importantly, the student needs.
Here are examples of how the core values are interpreted at
some of our member schools (NOTE: These are not the only programs offered by these schools and there
are many more schools not listed, for more detailed descriptions of the
school courses, please go to the individual school's website from the
school directory.)
School-Based Programs: In these programs, Outward Bound's educational approach is brought to
selected classes, grades, and/or subjects to address a specific need such as improved attendance or school culture.
Outward Bound staff members co-plan and teach classes using this approach.
Overseas Youth Programme: The training programmes include
confronting challenging obstacles and ropes courses, rock climbing and
abseiling down some beautiful rock faces, river kayaking and bush tramping
among the hilly ranges of Anakiwa. The participants would be able to appreciate
different weather conditions, the variety of terrain and the different
vegetation and wildlife unique to New Zealand. Community service is also
an integral part of the Course to give participants the opportunity of
helping others. A special component of the Course is a short cultural exchange
programme for the participants to visit places of interest and public institutions
and interact with the locals. It is a good opportunity to learn about different
cultures, lifestyles and socio-economic environments and establish new links.
The Classic Outward Bound Course: The instructors operate
to a simple formula. Week one is dedicated to the teaching of both new
outdoor skills and developing the essentials of teamwork and leadership.
Week two is when the instructor invites course members to begin making
their own decisions and plans, and week three is dominated by the final
Adventure Journey where new skills are applied and tested. The Classic
Outward Bound Course is special because of its length - seventeen activity
days and full-on enjoyment gives time to have a fundamental influence
on all those who take part. The achievements are greater, the satisfaction
more fulfilling and the levels of personal confidence the course generates
are unsurpassed.
Outdoor Professional Trainings: These courses are designed to help develop professional
standards and leadership for Outdoor Educators in Finland.
Many of our centers offer Outward Bound courses designed for the professional team and corporate leaders.
These courses are generally 1-7 days in length and focus on team building, communication issues, leadership
development and management skills. They utilize adventure based learning and a hands on approach to education.
