OUTWARD
BOUND WORLD CONFERENCE IN SINGAPORE A GREAT SUCCESS!
The Outward Bound World
Conference 2002 was held from 15 - 17 October 2002 at Outward Bound
Singapore, Pulau Ubin. This little island was host to more than 150 overseas
delegates representing 30 countries. The conference also attracted more
than 200 local teachers, principals and human resource practitioners;
making it the largest attended Outward Bound conference ever. The President
of Singapore, Mr S R Nathan, officially opened the Conference and also
launched the Peak Ascent, an innovative 25-metre high challenge tower.
Conference delegates were treated to an exciting array of activities
including try-outs of the Peak Ascent Challenge Tower, sea-kayaking, a
visit to SPARKC and its artificial tunnel, caving and maze facility. The
evenings were filled with stunning cultural performances from various
dance and music troupes as well as displays of ethnic art and handicraft
depicting Singapore's diverse cultural heritage.
The Conference programme included more than 30 concurrent workshops,
5 roundtable discussions, regional meetings, post-conference workshops
and the OBI AGM. For the first time, the conference also included presenters,
speakers and delegates from outside the Outward Bound community; allowing
a good exchange of ideas and initiatives.
This conference wouldn't have been possible without the tireless work
of the OB Singapore staff and their Executive Director, Jeremy Tay. THANKS!

AWARDS
GIVEN BY THE PRESIDENT OF SINGAPORE
At the Opening of the World Conference, Former Executive Director of OB
Singapore, Winston Lim was honoured with the Distinguished Service Award
from OBI. President Nathan also gave this year's OBI Innovative Programming
Awards to ELOB, USA and SPARKc, OB Singapore. Congratulations!

INNOVATION
AND LEARNING - WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS
The theme of the World Conference was Innovation and Learning. Over
the next few Electronic and Print newsletters, OBI will be printing some
of the highlights of speeches and workshops on this theme.
Dr. Todd Miner from Cornell Outdoor Education Program presented both
as a keynote speaker and in workshops. He looked at how Adventure Education
plays a role in university settings, where the physical and the cerebral
have been disconnected. In a separate workshop, Miner focused on the need
for more extended research into the effectiveness of Adventure Based Training
and Development (ABTD). He mentioned that in 2000, in the US alone, $54
billion (US) was spent on formal training, 12% of employers reported sending
employees to ABTD, and this was up 3% from the previous year. He presented
a comprehensive
bibiliography of what is known about how ABTD
works and it is now in the OBI
resource section.
OUTWARD
BOUND NETWORKS
Networking with people from Outward Bound schools around the world is
always one of the best parts of the Outward Bound World Conference. A
number of groups have been created to discuss their particular issues
at Outward Bound. Below is a list of just a few: Outward Bound Global
Facilitation Network, Marketing Network, Outward Bound Professional Programs
Network. If you are interested in joining one of these networks or if
a networking group was created that does not appear here, please contact
OBI for more information.
(note: this is for current Outward Bound Staff only)
OUTWARD
BOUND IDEAS MARKETPLACE
At the World Conference a group of staff participated in the "Ideas
Marketplace", which was designed to creatively envision the future
of Outward Bound Worldwide. Staff from around the world brainstormed ideas
that were presented to the community afterwards. Many of the groups focused
on the increasing importance of Outward Bound as a global provider of
personal development experiences. One staff generated idea that came from
this session is the WORLD
OUTWARD BOUND DAY. This was a suggestion that on the same day, around
the world, Outward Bound schools everywhere offer a "free" course
for students with little economic means. Students will have to pay 1 unit
of their local country's currency. The chosen day was Kurt Hahn's Birthday,
Dec. 14th. If
you have staff interested in volunteering to organize this event at your
school, or for more information click here.
