Outward
Bound Brunei Darussalam (OBBD)
Deep in the jungle interior of the Temburong District of Brunei
lays an Outward Bound center full of hidden splendor. To get there,
one must navigate by "Temuai" (a traditional longboat)
up river, trek through the tropical rainforest or helicopter down
into it. Welcome to the Operation Center of Outward Bound Brunei
Darussalam! Only a few kilometers to the north of this center is
a slightly less remote Logistics Center, from which most of the
residential courses depart.
Students of Outward Bound Brunei Darussalam have the opportunity
to experience first hand the challenges of living near pristine
tropical wildlife sanctuaries, working in teams on whitewater rivers,
traveling high in the canopy on challenge courses, and walking above
the river on an 81 meter suspension bridge. Because of its remoteness,
the center's main electricity is derived from a generator and its
water supply is obtained from the river by means of a pump and treatment
plant. In spite of the prominent presence of both centers in the
lush jungle and whitewater terrain of Temburong, continuous efforts
have been implemented to ensure that the surrounding natural habitats
are well preserved.
The historical milestone of Outward Bound Brunei Darussalam started
back in 1992 by the wisdom and vision of His Majesty the Sultan
of Brunei to initiate the idea of developing an Outward Bound Center
for the youth of the country. With the financial help of the Brunei
Shell Petroleum Company and Shell International and the Outward
Bound "know how" of Winston Lim from Outward Bound Singapore,
Outward Bound Brunei Darussalam began its operations by 1997. They
now serve the citizens of Brunei with a variety of both residential
and mobile courses from 3-14 days long. They work with local schools,
colleges, universities and corporations to provide courses that
encourage citizenship, responsibility and leadership.
