Outward Bound Lumut, Malaysia

Malaysia's Outward Bound School in Lumut has a proud history. It is one of the first extant centers established outside the U.K. In 1952, a member of the Outward Bound Trust of the U.K. visited what was then Malaya in the hopes of founding a sea school, like the Outward Bound School in Aberdovey. The sea school was to offer to Malayan industry, educational establishment, youth organizations, trade unions, government and public authorities, parents and others the opportunity to provide special character training for their young men. This idea became a reality in 1955, when the first courses began.

Today, Outward Bound Lumut, set on the western coast of peninsular Malaysia, is surrounded by the islands of Pangkor and Pulau Sembilan as well as rainforests and mountains. They offer courses from 3-25 days that include either a Sea Expedition (Whaler, Kayaking, or Rafting) or a Land Expedition (Solo Camping, Rock Climbing, Rappelling, Orienteering, Trekking, and Rope Course activities). The popularity of their classic course remains high, a testament to how OB Lumut has held true to the original vision of Outward Bound.

From its beginning, Outward Bound Lumut has sought to support the Malaysian multi-racial society of Malays, Chinese, Indians, Eurasians and Europeans in their programs. They have also focused much of their energy on families and strong family relationships. In addition, they are reaching out to younger children offering shorter courses that fit the children's developmental needs. Their current vision is to "Create situations and opportunities to learn, to share, and to help build people's potential towards a brighter tomorrow."
