Outward Bound Romania:

Creating and building community is what Outward Bound Romania is all about. Since its inception in 1993 by Mr. Imre Fodor, a civic leader in the city of Tirgu-Mures, it has developed and implemented programs for more than 5,000 young people and community leaders.

These programs not only instill local people with self confidence through standard Outward Bound activities, they also work towards building better communities by offering skills such as conflict resolution, project development, fundraising, and organizational development. In one rural development project, students have gone on to create local community service organizations that have continued to thrive and serve the people of Romania.

Other courses focus on creating harmony between the multiplicity of ethnic groups and cultures in the region. In March 1990, fighting broke out in Tirgu-Mures between parts of the Hungarian and Romanian population (including people from surrounding villages). In May 2000, Outward Bound organized a program with 24 participants - bringing together 12 Romanians and 12 Hungarians from these affected areas. It is through programs such as this that Outward Bound teaches diplomacy, youth leadership and tolerance.

As Outward Bound Romania expands it continues to serve economically disadvantaged youth, orphans, social workers and educators in the region. It also serves professionals and international clients on cross-cultural courses.
Surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains OB Romania has an ideal location for trekking, abseiling, climbing, community projects (ecological, intercultural), expeditions (bike, kayak or cross-country skiing), and orienteering. OB Romania also offers creative activities that help teach participants the handicraft arts of the region, which is a great intercultural experience for students both from Romania and abroad.

What students say about Outward Bound Romania:

"You asked what we will take home from this experience and there are so many things that I will take home. I will take home a new sense of confidence, responsibility, physical ability, and independence. I will take home a culture that I cannot wait to share with others I know. I have learned so many lessons about working with others and communicating. I have learned new things about myself, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about you and your life" --Holly Hough

"The most positive experiences were those moments when after uphill struggle I could look out at the impressive views from Ceahlau. These moments came only after hard work on my part, and were therefore very rewarding." --Jason Ruff
