Outward Bound Zimbabwe:

"To Serve, To Strive, and Not to Yield", the motto of Outward Bound, definitely suits the courageous and effective work of Outward Bound Zimbabwe. Located at the base of the Chimanimani Mountains within the Chimanimani National Park on the Eastern border of Zimbabwe, this Outward Bound School has worked hard to serve as a conduit of positive change in a country wrought with political and economic turmoil.

The school has two distinct histories. The original school started in 1961 and from the beginning worked to support multi-racial and ethnic courses in the region. Unfortunately, the thriving school was forced to close in 1976 due to the dangers of guerilla war in Eastern Rhodesia. Eleven years later, with the help of staff from the United Kingdom, the center reopened as Outward Bound Zimbabwe. Although the political turmoil has not fully subsided, the school continues to operate, maintaining its commitment to working across a broad spectrum of Zimbabweans, from rural school-leavers to school kids to corporate managers. Thanks to a broad base of funding they are financially stable, despite the severe economic crisis within the country.

Quality of courses has not been sacrificed amidst all the challenges. Students on an Outward Bound Zimbabwe course can spend 3 to 20 days exploring the true wilds of Eastern Zimbabwe, where they can see elephants, lions, buffalos, black rhinos, & leopards as well as enjoy high mountain views and spectacular waterfalls. One unique activity at the center is called the "Temple of Doom", a long traverse through a huge cleft in a large rock face. The name comes from a couple of house-sized boulders wedged above the students' heads as they walk through.
OB Zimbabwe has also become the expert in outdoor education in this region and they now offer wilderness search and rescue courses that they adapt for Mine Rescue Teams from the various mines across Zimbabwe. In addition they are looking to develop outdoor professionals by offering a Mountaincraft and Leadership course.
