Outward
Bound United Kingdom, Ullswater
As the operations headquarters for Outward Bound in the United
Kingdom (UK), the Ullswater center has a depth and breadth of offerings
that ensure its place in the family of four centers in the UK. Set
in a Georgian mansion on the north shore of Ullswater Lake, amidst
18 acres of woodland at the heart of Wordsworth country, Ullswater
participants enjoy Lakeland scrambles, water activities, ropes courses
and caving adventures. Ullswater students also utilize a high mountain
lodge, nestled under Helvellyn - one of the Lake District's highest
peaks.
Courses at Ullswater are very well suited for families, school groups,
and those seeking technical skills training. The dormitories at
Ullswater make it possible for large groups to visit the center
year-round. School and College courses are 50% of Outward Bound
UK's course participants and they have developed a number of offerings
to suit educators both in Aberdovey and Ullswater. Courses generally
range from 3-5 days and include induction for new students and new
classes, geography studies, adventure and challenge, and leadership
and teamwork. Trainers also visit school sites and deliver short
courses.
In addition to school youth, Outward Bound Ullswater offers a number
of training courses for college age students including technical
outdoor recreation skills, and "key skills"(required by
the government) which include communication, working with others,
problem solving, and improving one's own learning & performance.
Ullswater has also helped lead the way in safety management by offering
kayaking, canoeing and mountain leader assessment and skills development
courses.
Family weekends and day events at Ullswater help expose both parents
and youth to the opportunities available to them at Outward Bound
and help improve the quality of communication between parents and
children.
