One by one, crisply dressed personnel from the Royal Malaysian Navy regaled delegates and guests with a bringing forth of the national flags of each of the countries represented at the 11th World Conference in Lumut, Malaysia. The end of the flag ceremony signaled the arrival of His Royal Highness, Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak. Against a colorful flag adorned backdrop, His Royal Highness officially declared the conference open and congratulated its host, Outward Bound Malaysia, Lumut on its 50th anniversary.

The conference that followed was a stimulating three-day event that brought travelers from the four corners of the earth to the tropical climes of western Malaysia. With 37 Outward Bound centers and close to 300 participants in attendance, the conference delivered strongly on its theme, "Connecting with the Past, Planning the Future."

In the days that followed, an impressive list of dignitaries, delegates and guests were treated to a host of workshops, events, and social gatherings. The conference's keynote presentation, "Connecting with the Past," was delivered by a panelists from various of the worldwide Kurt Hahn-inspired organizations, and the centerpiece business meeting, Outward Bound International's Annual General Meeting, brought the member organizations up to date with the last year's official activities.

Conference highlights included the Market Place of Ideas, which was a forum for discussion of global issues, staff exchange, communications, business development and programs for young children. Workshop presenters like Dr. Tony Richards, an authority on Kurt Hahn, and Mr. Derrick Tang, a business quality expert, stimulated much discussion and reflection on topics of importance to the future of Outward Bound.

The conference concluded with an assembly that embraced "Planning the Future," as its theme, and a final a round up of ideas and discussion followed. A festive farewell dinner and celebration was then hosted at Outward Bound Malaysia's newly completed activities center in Lumut.

Various post-conference activities, including visits to nearby Pangkor Island, small-boat sailing in the Straights of Malacca, and overnight kayaking and hiking trips added to the conclusion of a well-received and successful Outward Bound World Conference.

EVENTS in 2003:

Reconnect Conference of Kurt Hahn Inspired Organizations - June 2003
In June 2003 the first ever gathering of all four organizations founded by Kurt Hahn took place at the Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific in British Columbia. Outward Bound International, Round Square Schools, United World Colleges and International (Duke of Edinburgh) Award met to increase the connections between the organizations and to promote discussion of the relevance of Kurt Hahn's educational philosophy today and in the future.

This was a great opportunity for staff, board members, and supporters of Outward Bound to come together, share ideas and build an international community.
